David Dwyer, owner of American Renewable Energy, has been a designer/builder, licensed in Evanston and Chicago, since 1981. His  wife and partner, Dr. Toni Bark, is a successful physician, medical innovator and businesswoman. Based on a sharply focused commitment to family and community, they entered the green building and distributed renewable energy business in 2001, starting with a plan for their own house. 

History of ARE

In 2002, David  purchased, re-designed and built the first urban geothermal drilling platform, adapting the technology and designing the process specifically for dense in-city applications. In 2003, David and Toni  began their first ‘Green Power’ projects in the Chicagoland area, both of which have been featured in local and national media.  Their commitment to natural capitalism and social entrepreneurship has evolved geometrically. 

David has completed courses in geothermal system design and installation, Photovoltaic system design and installation, solar thermal design and installation, and Wind Power site assessment and system installation. He has pioneered an extensive, first of its kind, study of the conventional energy and power grids in order to understand all of the financial and environmental implications of our energy future. His background as both  a designer and builder has been a great advantage in understanding and implementing these products and processes.    

Our client list  includes the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the Boy Scouts of America, Solargenix Energy, and the City of Chicago. We are completing the design process, working with the Chicago Climate Exchange, for a ‘Carbon Offset Certification Program’ which will provide an array of additional financing and environmental benefits for our clients, for the present and many years to come. We are also developing a plan which articulates the connections between agriculture, renewable energy, carbon reduction strategies, and the urban environment.

Memberships and Partnerships

In 2004, David and Toni became LEED Accredited Professionals, also joining the Association of Energy Engineers and the Illinois Solar Energy Society. During this period, David acquired certified training in Life Cycle Finance, Energy purchasing, Energy Auditing, Energy and Carbon Risk Management, and Advanced Photovoltaic System Design. 

ARE also became one of the early and active members of the Chicago Climate Exchange. In 2005, they developed a program and workshop given at the Chicago Center for Green Technology entitled ‘Green Power, Blue Collar’ which addresses local renewable energy finance and production, as well as permanent and localized energy business development and green collar jobs.
